UMeNET
UMeNET is the nickname for the University of Miami's eProcurement or spend management system that uses Ariba Buyer to manage the purchasing process and the Ariba Supplier Network (ASN) to integrate with vendors.

  • The first UMeNET order was placed in 1999
  • Around 15,000 vendors are listed in UMeNET
  • Around 2,000 purchase orders a month are placed on UMeNET
  • About 20 vendors offer Ariba PunchOut websites
  • UM started with Ariba Buyer version 6, then upgraded to version 7.1, and "may upgrade" to version 8.0 or 8.1
  • It's rumored that UM has spent over $15 million dollars on the project

Ariba PunchOut
Ariba PunchOut is the process by which a UMeNET customer creates a purchase requisition in Ariba Buyer but can then connect (or PunchOut) to a supplier's website to add the products they want. PunchOut offers many advantages over catalogs, including:

  • Complete control over user interface and customer experience
  • Supplier and/or buyer branding, e.g. Welcome UMeNET customers
  • Provides marketing opportunities, e.g. this month's special
  • Update product information in real-time without
  • Accommodate for configurable products, e.g. computers, print material
  • Around 130 companies use Ariba's software** [complete list]

Ariba Catalogs
Ariba CIF or cXML catalogs are essentially complex spreadsheets listing your products that are specially formatted to Ariba's standards and adhere to UM's specifications.  A simple catalog contains:

  • Dunn and Bradstreet number (DUNS)
  • Supplier and manufacturer item numbers
  • Short and long descriptions
  • UNSPSC category codes
  • UNUOM unit of measures
  • List and sell prices
  • Product images
  • Complete control over user interface and customer experience

Web-to-Print / Promo
Companies that sell highly customizable and complex products, such as printing and promotional companies face additional challenges.  Conversely, they have additional options:

Full eMail Acknowledgements
As of June 2004, the University began asking it's UM-wide vendors to start providing "full eMail acknowledgements".  These are emails sent back to the order taker that contain:

  • Date order received
  • Date order to be shipped
  • Date to be delivered
  • Backorder status

Electronic Data Interchange
University-wide vendors are also being asked to start submitting invoices using EDI.:
